One Year and 281 Recipes Later

Happy Anniversary Weekend to Everyday Cooking Adventures! One year ago, I set out to learn how to cook more than just mac ‘n cheese and sandwiches. This meant learning to actually cook and prepare meals, not just throwing together shredded cheese on top of pretzels and microwaving it (don’t knock it ’til you try it people)! I’ve made 281 recipes over the past year. That’s one new recipe made 77% of the days in the year. Phew! I’ve tried recipes from cookbooks like Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Chef Guru Julia Child, The Newlyweds’ Cookbook, and True Food Kitchen.

Julia Child’s Coq Au Vin
The Newlywed’s Cookbook’s Potato Wedges

To recipes from magazines like Martha Stewart LivingBetter Homes & Gardens and Real Simple:

Martha Stewart’s Potato, Tomato, Zucchini Gratin
Better Homes & Gardens’ Sugar Cookies

To those from family and friends:

Mom’s Prosciutto and Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breasts
Beau & Betsy’s Blackberry Pie

And finally, from other wonderful cooking blogs:

Mel’s Kitchen Cafe’s Sweet & Sour Chicken
Proud Italian Cook’s Pork Chops in Thyme, Mustard Sauce
Please check out my Cookbook available on Amazon.com, called Holiday Cooking for New Cooks: Tips, Tricks and Recipes to help get you through the holidays with menus, recipes, and advice organized by holiday throughout the year…from Thanksgiving to Summertime!

My Goals for 2013 included various cooking, baking, and foodie desires that would take me out of my comfort zone and bring my closer to my family’s cooking traditions. Let’s see how I’ve done and what more I have to do!

1. Make my own pie crust from scratch-YES! See pie recipe above.
2. Make more family recipes-YES!
3. Learn how to make a basic salad dressing-YES! Quite a few actually!
4. Make my own pizza dough-2 MONTHS LEFT!
5. Perfect the omelet-2 MONTHS LEFT!
6. Make homemade matzo ball soup, not just the box kind-YES! Find the recipe in my cookbook: Holiday Cooking for New Cooks: Tips, Tricks and Recipes
7. Attempt a thick, homemade milkshake-2 MONTHS LEFT!
8. Learn how to make authentic Pad Thai-YES!
9. Try to make my own sushi-2 MONTHS LEFT!

So, more than half accomplished…better get to work on the rest! I want to thank all my readers from my family to my friends to the people out there who find my stuff on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and the Internet at large. Thank you and I hope we can continue to keep cooking and trying new recipes together in the year to come!
