I recently returned from a long journey with my parents to and from South Africa, and with a 9 hour time difference, I’ve been very jet-lagged. In some jet-lagged foggy sleep mode I had a craving for an In-n-Out Burger, something I loved indulging in back in California, but don’t have here in Montana. I googled recipes for their burger, because their sauce and perfectly oozing cheesy burger are the epitome of burger greatness.

I found this copycat recipe and didn’t turn back. I even went to our local small market (the big grocery store is over an hour away) for outrageously priced organic ground beef. I made the sauce in under 10 minutes and it looked pinkish and tasted tangy just like at In-n-Out! The only downside, it was a little runny which when then put on top of a warm burger makes it quite messy. But it certainly tasted close to the real thing and was a success. Also, we used shredded cheddar instead of American cheese. On the side, I made some simple summer squash chips. Here’s my burger:

Copy-Cat In-n-Out Burger & Sauce
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 Tbsp. ketchup
- 1 Tbsp. white vinegar
- 2 tsp. sugar
- 2 tsp. sweet pickle relish
- 2 tsp. onion finely minced
REMAINING INGREDIENTS
- Hamburger buns
- ground beef
- American sliced cheese
- lettuce
- tomato, sliced
- onion, finely sliced
- pickle slices
1. Stir sauce ingredients together until well combined.
2. For the bun, butter both sides and toast it until butter melts and edges get a little crispy.
3. Smother some sauce on bottom bun.
4. Put on tomato slice, lettuce, and beef patty on top.
5. Top the patty with onion and pickle as desired and a little more sauce and top with bun.
